Haleakala Bike Tours
What You Need To Know:
- The biking portion begins at 6,500 feet—not at the 10,000 ft. summit.
- Tours that offer sunrise trips all drive to the summit to watch the sunrise, and drive you back down to 6,500 feet to begin the biking portion.
- Since sunrise bike tours are more expensive, you can save money by making a separate trip to view sunrise at Haleakala, OR, if your Maui trip is short on time, just spend the extra money and do both in one day!
- Hotel pickups are convenient, but more expensive. Save money by driving yourself to the baseyard (and not waste time picking other people up!)
- The summit is COLD, as in snow/ice/freezing. Pack warm clothing, including long pants and gloves!
- Some companies offer guided tours; others allow the freedom to bike on your own. Choose the trip that's the best fit for your group.
- Trip lengths vary. Some finish by the ocean in Pa'ia, others finish in the town of Ha'iku (around 1,000 feet), and one tour finishes at 4,000 feet and is a combo tour with ziplining.
- Watching the sunrise—especially in summer—means waking up at 2:30am. Given the early wakeup, plan this experience for early in your trip when you're still waking early from jetlag.
- It is possible to bike down from the summit. Just rent a bike from a Maui bike shop, and then convice someone in your party to shuttle you to the top!
- You cannot have been scuba diving within the last 24 hours.
