Kalama Beach Park (aka "The Cove")

Overview: If you booked a surf lesson in South Maui, this is where it's going to be. "The Cove" as it's popularly known amongst locals is one of the best places for surf lessons on Maui...but the crowds can be out of control.

The sandy bottom and shallow water makes this is a user-friendly spot for beginners, and there are small, gently-rolling waves that pretty muchg break yaer round. every day of the year has gently-rolling waves.

Good For: Surf lessons, standup paddling, volleyball, families with young children, escaping the wind, food and drinks within walking distance.

Not So Good For: Crowds, snorkeling, swimming.

Maui Expert Tip For Cove Park: Visit in the morning before the wind picks up. The earlier your surf lesson, the better. Also, if you decide to rent a paddleboard and go for a long paddle, I suggest going south toward Kamaole I, since the area to the north is notorious for sharks!
Directions and Parking Situation: There are three different parking areas for Cove Park:

The closest, and most convenient, are the parking stalls right along South Kihei Road--but good luck trying to get one. Sometimes the early bird gets the worm, but more often than not they're full.

If you want to kick back and relax on the sand, the next most convenient place to park is in the parking lot for Kalama Park. It's just north of the volelyball court and about a two minute walk from the beach.

If, on the other hand, you're just here to surf, you can park in the lot for the official "Cove Park," but there isn't a beach or any sand.

Facilities: Showers, restrooms, picnic tables, surf schools across the street, within walking distance of restaurants and shops.
