Maluaka Beach

Overview: Maluaka Beach (or "Prince Beach" to longtime locals who remember the Maui Prince resort that used to rest on these shores), Maluaka Beach is "out of sight out of mind," since you can't see it from the road.

It's arguably one of the best beaches in South Maui, and is a family-friendly Maui beach for boogie boarding, snorkeling, splashing in the waves, or just building a sand castle in the shade.

The snorkeing charter, Kai Kanani, runs snorkeling trips to Molokini that load directly from the beach, and this is also one of Maui's most popular spots for a sunset wedding.

Be aware, however, that the "Makena Cloud," can hover here on many afternoons, which means mornings are gorgeous and sunsets are spectacuar, but afternoons can be cloudy and cold.

Good For: Boogie boarding, snorkeling, early morning trips to Molokini Crater, families with young children, sunset weddings.

Not So Good For: Finding parking, people with mobility issues, suntanning in the afternoon (see: "Makena Cloud").

Maui Expert Tip For Maluaka Beach: Arrive early to beat the crowds, and since food options in Makena are extremely limited, consider packing some drinks and snacks, because there's little available nearby (except food trucks).

Directions and Parking Situation: There are two different parking areas for Maluaka Beach: A small lot by Keawalai Church toward the southern end of Makena Road, and a much larger lot on Makena Keoneoio Road, just a few hundred yards before Makena State Park.

The southern entrance means navigating some stairs, whereas the northern entrance by Keawalai Church has a roundabout dropoff where you can drive close to the beach, in case you have people in your party with mobilty issues.

Facilities: Restrooms, showers
